Task 3.1

Week 8 29/04/2019

This week i have caught up with the writing, adding the misses pieces and made a strong plan on how to complete the work and it ultimately results in me just getting the work done. In addition i also had a look at a crashed version of my model and what that could look like.

I was happy with the sketch but after a while thinking about it i came to the conclusion that the old rally car needed a better result that being presented as a destroyed car. Especially as the car was a great success in the 1980’s winning the Monte-Carlo and the Tour De Corse twice as well. All done by Jean Ragnotti and his co-driver Jean-marc Andrie. So i decided to go with the first car as modelling the car to look in pristine condition, except for dirt and scratch marks due to racing.

Week 8 Summary

This week has been alright for progress as i have got a fair amount done, including the tasks i missed from last week. I have finalized the design for the model, explained in the previous paragraph. However i now need to begin creating the model in Maya, otherwise it will be too late to complete my model on time.

Week 9 6/05/2019

Plan

This week i shall:

  • complete my model.
  • correct any issues with model, as prone to making little mistakes.
  • unwrap the model.
  • Update my blog with the work i have done.

This should be enough as if i plan to complete anymore than this i may be aiming too high for completion this week as there is bound to be issues and things that delay me in completing the model by this week.

Current Position

This week began well with me completing a nice chunk of my model within the first few days. I came across some issues with extra vertices or Ngons as examples. Another issue was i had to model a spoiler for the car but i could not find a clean and good way of doing it, which held me back a lot. This led me to not completing the model but i did correct my errors, giving the car a cleaner look and making the model go together properly so i can unwrap it without too much issue. In the end i did complete the spoiler which looked good and seemed to have no errors. In addition, i completed; the front bumper, skirts,, bonnet, side panels, rood, windows and the majority of the car. However, i was left to do the rear bumper, rear window, alloys, headlights and missing details which i believe is important to be added.

You can see from the photos above that i got the majority of the build done however i did not complete it. The main shape is there on the parts that i have completed, like the front bumper for example. Showing the ridges and parts that poke out of it.

Summary

unfortunately i did not complete the modeling which means i am still not catching up with my work particularly, but i have made progress. The work i have achieved so far is good, and clearly represents the Renault 5 Turbo, especially after posting a photo of my work on social media and having people messaging me saying they liked my model of the car. Which clears my mind of being worried people would not recognize the car or think it was a different car entirely, which i personally think would be worse.

Week 10 13/05/19

Plan

This week i shall:

  • Make sure i have not missed any mistakes or issues.
  • Complete the rest of my model.
  • Add additional details to improve overall look of the car.
  • Create smoothing groups to make the car panels look smoother and to help separate parts of the car, making it easier for me to unwrap.
  • Unwrap the car and export it to substance painter to be textured.
  • If i can, texture the car as well so that i have fully caught up and can concentrate on my blog.
  • And lastly, create Boards and get them printed off.

If i could i would like to also update my blog with the work i achieve over the week but i would understand if i was not able to do this, as i am mainly aiming to work on my model as that is what my blog is based around and without it there is no point in my writing on it.

Current Position

At this time i have completed a lot of my work and ticked a lot of boxes this week. Obviously, i started by finishing the rear of the car and adding the headlights, plus making the alloys. I showed my progress with Rob who saw room for improvement. So additional detail to the windows was made and the headlights also. Next I did the smoothing groups, which by themselves make a small deference, but together make a big impact. As shown below they made a serious impact on the look of my piece and how much it has changed since the week prior.

After this i showed my work to Rob who checked for any mistakes i had made and saw that there was easy little improvements to detail i could make to the windows and headlights.

Now that all of this had been achieved, i was able to unwrap the model. This was difficult as there are many components to the car so their were many separate UV’s that i had to stitch together so i could make sense of everything. This alone was challenging and to completely unwrap the model it took me an entire evening and some extra work the next morning.

UV

This was the ending result of my unwrap, which looks good to me. the UV’s on the far right are not actually crossing although it looks like it. They are just very close to each other. But this meant i could not texture this in Substance Painter as soon as.

It was now Friday and i was aiming to do a simple texture that represented the car and did the job. I spent the entirety of Friday texturing the car so that i could complete it and get the Boards done for print off. Because of how i kept the texturing simple i was able to complete that by about 2:00, which gave me 2 hours to complete the boards before the end of the day. In the end i textured the car with two base colours because they are rally cars and they have always and different colours. Before rendering some angled photos i needed to have a play with lighting to create a more metal panel look to the car. Somehow this became more difficult than it should have done however after an hour me trying to fix the lighting i found the issue. Which was a silly tick box to add all lights in effect when rendering, which seriously annoyed me as i spent an hour trying to work it out,

Thankfully, Colin gave me some great ideas for the background for the colours, because basic colours were just not looking good at all. The first idea was to take a picture of a street and use gauge blur to create a nice background effect but kept the focus on the car. Unfortunately because i wanted different angles of the car the street idea just looked weird and out of place in the background.

Next was a worn tire tread idea that went across the screen diagonally with a contrasting colour to make the colour of the car pop. With some playing with layer effect types and different tire treads we came up with a nice tire design that was simple but good. After some playing we used a purple for the background. This was because i had textured the car in two base colours blue and red, so purple was a sort of middle ground between the two.

This was the final result, after printing everything off:

Summary

This week was tough and it did drag on a bit but the end result was great. I found the unwrap very difficult, but this was mainly due to extra or non connected vertices in the spoiler that should not have been there. Which resulted in me re-doing the spoiler and simplifying it so that the shape was still accurate however it did not have unnecessary vertices. Moreover, the lighting issue i had was irritating as me and Colin both could not figure out the issue for ages and Ash figures it out in seconds, asking us if we ticked a box when saving the render.
